Fees and insurance
Every dentist in the Netherlands charges the same
Dental fees here are set by the Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit (NZa), the Dutch healthcare authority. Every dentist in the country works from the same maximum tariff list, and it changes each year on 1 January.
So price isn’t a reason to choose one dentist over another. Whether you feel comfortable, whether you can reach them, and whether they take the time — those are.
Insurance
How insurance works here — the short version
This catches out almost everyone who moves to the Netherlands:
We have contracts with most insurers, so we can usually bill them directly. You’d then only get an invoice for whatever isn’t covered.
Basic insurance does not cover adult dental care
The basisverzekering is compulsory health insurance, and for dentistry it covers only specific exceptions — specialist surgery, for instance. Routine check-ups, fillings and crowns for adults are not included.
For that you need additional insurance
The aanvullende verzekering is optional, you choose the level of cover, and what it reimburses varies enormously between policies. Check yours before assuming anything.
Children under 18 are covered
Routine dental care for children comes out of the basic insurance, with no deductible.
The deductible normally doesn’t apply
The eigen risico applies to the basic insurance, not to dental care paid from additional insurance.
Knowing the cost in advance
For any substantial treatment we prepare a written estimate, itemised by treatment code. You can send it to your insurer before deciding anything.
Ask us for one whenever you’d like. For larger courses of treatment we do it as standard.
Paying
You can settle up straight after your treatment, by PIN (Dutch debit card) or in cash.
If you don’t pay at the practice, we send the bill to Infomedics, the company that handles our invoicing. Infomedics claims the treatment from your health insurer. Anything your insurer doesn’t cover, Infomedics sends to you as a bill, by email or by post. So don’t be surprised by the sender’s name: it’s the bill for your treatment with us.
You can pay that bill by iDEAL or bank transfer. Paying in instalments is also possible.
What you pay yourself and what is reimbursed depends on your policy and your excess.
Cancelling an Appointment
Please cancel at least 24 hours before your appointment, by phone or email. If you forget the appointment or cancel later than that, we charge for the time that was reserved.
That time was held for you and can’t be given to anyone else at short notice. Better to call or email too early than too late — moving an appointment is never a problem.
Common questions
Questions we get asked most
Why don’t you publish a price list?
Because the tariffs are national and change every January. A wrong price on a healthcare site is worse than no price at all, so we link to the official NZa list instead — that one is always current.
Can I get an estimate before I commit to anything?
Yes. Ask for one at any point. For larger courses of treatment we prepare one as standard, itemised by treatment code so your insurer can assess it.
I’ve just arrived and don’t have Dutch insurance yet. Can I still be seen?
Yes. You’d be treated as a private patient and invoiced directly, and we can sort the insurance side once your cover starts.
How can I pay?
You can settle up straight after your treatment, by PIN or in cash. Otherwise the bill goes through Infomedics, the company that handles our invoicing: they claim from your insurer and send you a bill for anything that isn’t covered. You can pay it by iDEAL, bank transfer or in instalments. What you pay yourself depends on your policy and your excess.
Questions about cover? Just ask.
We explain the Dutch system as often as we clean teeth. Call us, or send a request and we’ll come back to you within one working day.
